How to Play Video Poker: A Strategy Guide for Beginners

Video poker mixes slot-machine speed with poker decisions. You get five cards, choose which to keep, and draw replacements. The goal is to end with a paying hand.

Hand Rankings You Need to Know

Most beginners start with Jacks or Better. Here are the hands that pay, from strongest to weakest.

Hand Example Notes
Royal flush A K Q J 10 all same suit Top payout, rare
Straight flush 9 8 7 6 5 all same suit Five in a row, same suit
Four of a kind Four 7s plus any fifth card Very strong
Full house Three 8s and two 4s Three plus a pair
Flush Any five cards same suit Ignore order
Straight 10 9 8 7 6 mixed suits Five in a row
Three of a kind Three queens plus two kickers Pays in most machines
Two pair Two 6s and two 3s plus one kicker Common payout
Jacks or better Pair of jacks, queens, kings, or aces Minimum paying hand

Step-by-Step Play

Walk up to a machine, pick your bet size, and press deal.

  1. Insert money or a ticket and choose your coin value.
  2. Press Deal. You receive five random cards.
  3. Tap the cards you want to hold. The machine lights them.
  4. Press Draw. Unheld cards are replaced.
  5. Check the screen for your final hand and any payout.

That is one complete round. You can repeat immediately.

Basic Strategy Decisions

Follow these simple rules on Jacks or Better machines. They cut the house edge without needing complex charts.

  • Hold any pair of jacks or better. Discard everything else.
  • With four cards to a flush or straight, keep those four and draw one.
  • Never hold a single ace unless you also have a pair or better already.
  • Two pair? Keep both pairs and draw one card.
  • Low pair (tens or lower)? Hold it only if you have nothing better.

Imagine you are dealt K Q J 7 3 all hearts. You hold the four hearts and draw for the flush. If the draw gives you the 10 of hearts, you hit the royal.

Another hand: 8 8 5 4 2. Hold the pair of eights. Throw away the rest and hope for trips or better on the draw.
